What to do
Operators of affected DR 400 aeroplanes must modify the air filter attachment fitting within 50 flight hours or at the next scheduled maintenance, whichever occurs first. After modification, or for aeroplanes without affected parts, repetitive inspections and cleaning of the air filter must be performed every 50 flight hours or during the annual inspection. Any incorrectly positioned air filter found during inspections must be corrected before the next flight. Only serviceable air induction ducts may be installed after the effective date.
Summary
EASA Airworthiness Directive 2020-0001 is an airworthiness directive addressing the air intake duct modification and inspection for CEAPR DR 400 series aeroplanes equipped with specific air induction ducts (G type P/N 56.18.68.320, H type P/N 56.18.13.010, or J type P/N 56.18.68.360). It mandates modification of the air filter attachment fitting and repetitive inspections to prevent engine in-flight shutdown caused by insect blockage. The directive applies to all serial numbers of the affected DR 400 models.
What changed
This new directive introduces mandatory modification of the air filter attachment fitting on affected DR 400 aeroplanes to prevent insects from bypassing the engine air filter. It also requires repetitive inspections and cleaning of the air filter at specified intervals to ensure proper positioning and prevent engine fuel feed blockage. Additionally, it defines serviceable and affected parts and sets conditions for installation of air induction ducts.
Why it matters
This directive is critical for aviation professionals as it addresses a safety risk of engine in-flight shutdown due to insect blockage in the carburettor, which could lead to emergency landings and potential injuries. Operators and maintenance organizations must comply to ensure continued airworthiness and avoid operational disruptions. Compliance ensures the reliability of the engine air intake system and reduces the risk of unexpected engine failures.
