EASA AD 2024-0197
Oxygen — SafeLav Gaseous Oxygen Container — Replacement
Summary
EASA Airworthiness Directive 2024-0197 is issued for Airbus A318, A319, A320, A321, A330, and A340 aeroplanes concerning the SafeLav gaseous oxygen container (SLGOC). The directive addresses a production deficiency in certain SLGOC batches that may cause oxygen flow activation failure due to a missing heat treatment on the actuation pin. This AD applies to specific part numbers and serial numbers of SLGOCs installed on these aircraft models.
What Changed
EASA AD 2024-0197 supersedes the previous AD 2023-0094 and extends applicability to include the newly certified Airbus A321-253NY model. It retains the original requirements for replacement of affected SLGOCs and prohibits installation of these parts on all affected and new aircraft models. The AD also updates the list of affected parts and clarifies compliance requirements.
Why It Matters
This directive is critical for aviation professionals as it ensures the reliability of supplemental oxygen systems in case of cabin decompression, directly impacting passenger safety. Operators and maintenance organizations must identify and replace affected oxygen containers to maintain airworthiness and regulatory compliance. Failure to comply could result in oxygen supply failure during emergencies, posing serious safety risks.
What To Do
Operators of affected Airbus models must replace each affected SafeLav gaseous oxygen container with a serviceable part within 8 months after 22 May 2023 if not already done. From 1 November 2024, installation of any affected SLGOC is prohibited on all Group 1 and Group 2 aeroplanes, including the A321-253NY. Compliance with Airbus Alert Operators Transmission instructions is mandatory for replacement procedures.
