What to do
Directors of operations, training providers, program managers, and pilots operating MU-2B series airplanes must verify that only FAA accepted checklists are used and incorporated into training programs. Flight instructors, owners, and operators must be knowledgeable and compliant with SFAR No. 108 requirements. No specific compliance deadline is stated, but immediate action is strongly recommended to maintain safety and regulatory compliance.
Summary
The Mitsubishi MU-2B Aeroplanes — Use of Checklists Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO 16003) issued by the Federal Aviation Administration emphasizes the mandatory use of FAA accepted checklists for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America MU-2B series airplanes. This SAFO addresses safety concerns identified during an NTSB investigation where unapproved checklists were found on MU-2B aircraft. It highlights regulatory requirements under Special Federal Air Regulation No. 108 for checklist use and training.
What changed
SAFO 16003 reinforces the requirement that pilots, operators, and flight instructors of MU-2B series airplanes must use only FAA accepted checklists as mandated by SFAR No. 108. It responds to NTSB safety recommendations by urging the removal and discontinuation of unapproved checklists in these aircraft. The document also notes MHIA's distribution of a Service News Letter reminding stakeholders of these checklist requirements.
Why it matters
This SAFO is critical for aviation professionals because using unapproved checklists can increase operational risk and contribute to accidents. Compliance ensures standardized procedures that enhance flight safety and regulatory adherence. Operators, maintenance organizations, and training providers must ensure their personnel are fully aware of and trained with FAA accepted checklists to mitigate safety risks.
