What to do
Directors of Operations, Training Managers, Check Pilots, and flightcrews should review and update their manuals and training programs to incorporate the recommendations of SAFO 14001. They must ensure pilots are trained on proper aileron trim use, including pre-takeoff verification and cautious in-flight adjustments. There is no specific compliance deadline stated, but timely integration into operational policies and training is advised.
Summary
SAFO 14001 is a Safety Alert for Operators issued by the FAA concerning the aileron trim systems on Cessna Citation CE-500 series aircraft, including models 500, 501, 550, S550, 551, and 560. It informs operators about the sensitivity of the aileron trim controls and highlights the importance of following manufacturer procedures to ensure safe operation. The alert is based on findings from a fatal accident and subsequent flight tests conducted by Cessna and the FAA.
What changed
SAFO 14001 introduces guidance emphasizing the proper use and sensitivity of the aileron trim system on Cessna Citation CE-500 type aircraft. It reinforces adherence to aircraft limitations and standard operating procedures, recommending verification of aileron trim settings before takeoff and caution during in-flight use. The document also advises operators to align their training programs with the manufacturer's recommended procedures.
Why it matters
This SAFO matters because improper use of the aileron trim system has been linked to a fatal accident, underscoring the critical safety implications for pilots and operators. Ensuring compliance with recommended procedures reduces the risk of loss of control incidents. It also helps operators maintain regulatory compliance and enhances pilot proficiency and safety awareness regarding the aircraft's control systems.
