What to do
Operators and flight crews should familiarize themselves with the bulletin's recommendations and incorporate volcanic ash avoidance strategies into their operational procedures. Maintenance organizations should be prepared to inspect and service aircraft exposed to volcanic ash according to the guidance. No specific compliance deadlines are stated, but prompt adoption of the recommendations is advised to enhance safety.
Summary
Flight in Airspace with Contamination of Volcanic Ash is a Safety Information Bulletin addressing the risks associated with operating aircraft in airspace contaminated by volcanic ash. The bulletin provides guidance relevant to all aircraft types and engine models potentially exposed to volcanic ash, emphasizing safety and operational considerations. It aims to enhance awareness and promote best practices to mitigate hazards posed by volcanic ash to flight operations.
What changed
This Safety Information Bulletin introduces comprehensive guidance on recognizing, avoiding, and managing volcanic ash contamination during flight operations. It outlines procedures for flight crews and operators to minimize exposure and mitigate risks associated with volcanic ash ingestion and damage. The bulletin serves as a new advisory resource rather than an amendment to existing regulations.
Why it matters
Volcanic ash poses significant risks to aircraft safety, including engine failure and airframe damage. This bulletin is crucial for aviation professionals as it helps operators, maintenance teams, and compliance personnel understand how to identify and respond to volcanic ash hazards effectively. Implementing the guidance reduces the likelihood of in-flight incidents and costly maintenance due to ash contamination.
