What to do

Affected operators should either remove the baby nursing tables, replace them with improved designs as specified in Airbus SB A320-25-1214 for A319, A320, and A321 aircraft, or obtain approved replacement instructions for A300-600, A310, and A330 aircraft via Airbus's RFC or RMO process. Operators should also consider applying warning placards where applicable. There is no mandatory compliance deadline specified in the bulletin.

Summary

EASA Safety Information Bulletin 2012-07 addresses the replacement of pivot-type hinges with piano-type hinges on Diehl Comfort Modules (formerly DASELL) baby nursing tables installed on Airbus A319, A320, A321, A300-600, A310, and A330 aircraft. The bulletin informs operators about reported incidents of finger injuries and infant entrapment caused by the folding mechanism of these nursing tables. It provides references to Airbus service bulletins and operator information telexes related to design improvements and safety measures.

What changed

This bulletin introduces information about the safety risk associated with the pivot-type hinges on baby nursing tables and recommends replacing them with piano-type hinges or applying warning placards as per Airbus service bulletins. It highlights the availability of design modifications for A319, A320, and A321 aircraft and the process to obtain approved instructions for A300-600, A310, and A330 aircraft through Airbus's RFC or RMO process. The bulletin does not mandate compliance but supports implementation of safer design solutions.

Why it matters

This information is important for aviation professionals because it addresses a safety hazard that has caused injuries to passengers, including infants, due to the folding mechanism of baby nursing tables. Operators and maintenance organizations need to be aware of the potential risks and the available design improvements to reduce injury risk. Compliance teams should consider these recommendations to enhance passenger safety and avoid incidents related to lavatory equipment.
