What to do
Operators of affected Honda Model HA-420 airplanes must inspect the wheel speed transducer wiring harness, replace it if damaged, install wiring hardware, reroute the harness, and update the AFM and QRH with revised abnormal procedures. These actions must be completed by April 6, 2020, the effective date of the AD. Comments on the AD are accepted until May 4, 2020.
Summary
Federal Aviation Administration Airworthiness Directive 2020-04-14 is a final rule addressing Honda Aircraft Company LLC Model HA-420 airplanes. It mandates inspection and possible replacement of the wheel speed transducer wiring harness, installation of wiring hardware, rerouting of the wiring harness on both brake assemblies, and revision of the Abnormal Procedures section in the airplane flight manual and quick reference handbook.
What changed
This new airworthiness directive introduces requirements to inspect the wheel speed transducer wiring harness for damage caused by excessive slack, replace the harness if necessary, install additional wiring hardware, and reroute the wiring harness on both left and right brake assemblies. It also requires updating the AFM and QRH to correct procedures related to anti-skid braking system failures.
Why it matters
This AD addresses a critical safety issue where damage to the wiring harness can cause loss of normal braking without proper pilot alert, potentially leading to reduced directional control and loss of airplane control during landing and ground operations. Compliance ensures operators maintain safe braking functionality and pilots receive accurate failure indications and procedures, reducing risk of accidents.
