What to do
Operators must amend the Rotorcraft Flight Manual normal procedures within 7 days of the effective date, 27 November 2024, following Leonardo Service Bulletin 412-163 instructions. All flight crews must be informed of the changes and operate the helicopter accordingly. Implementing any RFM revision containing the same content as the service bulletin is also acceptable for compliance.
Summary
EASA Airworthiness Directive 2024-0212 is an amendment concerning the Rotorcraft Flight Manual normal procedures for Leonardo S.p.A. AB412 and AB412EP helicopters. The directive addresses a safety issue related to cracked main gearbox support cases reported on similar Bell Textron Inc. Model 412 helicopters. It mandates updates to the flight manual procedures to mitigate the risk of structural failure and loss of helicopter control.
What changed
This directive requires the amendment of the Rotorcraft Flight Manual normal procedures for all serial numbers of AB412 and AB412EP helicopters. The amendment follows Leonardo Service Bulletin 412-163 and aligns with previous FAA actions on similar helicopters. It introduces updated procedures to prevent conditions that could lead to main gearbox support case cracks.
Why it matters
The directive is critical for maintaining the structural integrity and safe operation of affected helicopters. Operators and maintenance organizations must ensure compliance to prevent potential catastrophic failures of the main gearbox support case. Compliance with this AD helps avoid reduced helicopter control and enhances overall flight safety.
