EASA AD 2023-0167R1
Landing Gear — Main Landing Gear Axles — Inspection
Summary
EASA Airworthiness Directive 2023-0167R1 is a regulatory document addressing inspection requirements for main landing gear axles with Part Number 55-2117042-00 installed on Airbus A330 and A340 aeroplanes. It applies to specific serial numbers of these axles that may have coating defects leading to corrosion and potential failure. The directive mandates repetitive inspections and corrective actions to ensure continued airworthiness of affected aircraft.
What Changed
This revision of EASA AD 2023-0167 updates the original directive issued in August 2023 by specifying that after the embodiment of a SAFRAN Landing System Component Maintenance Manual repair, the affected main landing gear axle is no longer considered defective. It also clarifies inspection intervals, corrective actions, and terminating actions related to the repair and replacement of affected parts.
Why It Matters
This directive is critical for operators and maintenance organizations to prevent main landing gear axle failures that could lead to landing gear collapse and potential injury or damage. Compliance ensures the safety and airworthiness of Airbus A330 and A340 fleets by addressing a known coating quality issue. It also provides clear guidance on inspection intervals and repair options, facilitating effective maintenance planning and regulatory compliance.
What To Do
Operators of affected Airbus A330 and A340 aeroplanes must inspect the specified main landing gear axles within 24 months of part entry into service and every 24 months thereafter, following Airbus Service Bulletin A330-32-3305. If discrepancies are found, corrective actions approved by SAFRAN Landing Systems must be completed before further flight. Additionally, affected parts must be replaced with serviceable parts within 150 months of entry into service. Installation of affected parts on any aircraft is prohibited from 13 September 2023 onward.
