What to do
Operators of Dornier 328-100 and 328-300 aircraft must perform a detailed inspection of the bonding straps inside the feeder wing tank and wing tanks within 160 days from 26 July 2023. If any damage is detected, the affected parts must be replaced before the next flight or repaired following instructions from Deutsche Aircraft GmbH. Compliance with the Deutsche Aircraft GmbH Alert Service Bulletins ASB-328-28-047 or ASB-328J-28-023 is required.
Summary
EASA Airworthiness Directive 2023-0137 is an airworthiness directive issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency affecting all Dornier 328-100 and Dornier 328-300 aeroplanes. It addresses the inspection of bonding straps located inside the feeder wing tank and outer and inner wing tanks to detect damage that could compromise electrical bonding. The directive requires a one-time detailed inspection and, if necessary, replacement of damaged parts to prevent potential ignition sources in fuel tanks.
What changed
EASA Airworthiness Directive 2023-0137 introduces a mandatory inspection requirement for bonding straps in the fuel tanks of Dornier 328 aircraft due to reported damage that could impair electrical bonding. This directive mandates inspection within 160 days of the effective date and corrective actions if damage is found. It is issued as an interim measure with the possibility of further ADs to follow.
Why it matters
This directive is critical for aviation professionals because damaged bonding straps can lead to loss of bonding function, increasing the risk of ignition in fuel tanks during lightning strikes. Compliance ensures continued airworthiness and safety of Dornier 328 aircraft, helping operators and maintenance organizations prevent potentially catastrophic fuel tank fires or explosions. It also affects maintenance planning and parts replacement schedules.
