EASA AD 2022-0191R1
Main Rotor Drive — Main Gearbox Oil Cooling Fan — Inspection / Replacement / Modification
Summary
EASA Airworthiness Directive 2022-0191R1 is an updated safety directive addressing the main gearbox (MGB) oil cooling fan rotor shaft bearings on Airbus Helicopters SA 330 J models. It mandates inspections, replacements, and modifications of affected MGB fan bearing assemblies to prevent rotor burst incidents. The directive applies to all serial numbers of SA 330 J helicopters and involves specific part numbers for bearings and assemblies.
What Changed
This revision extends the compliance time for the required modification involving the installation of an improved MGB fan bearing assembly. It retains previous requirements for inspections and replacements but allows more time for operators to complete the modification. The update also incorporates revised service bulletin instructions reflecting these changes.
Why It Matters
This directive is critical for maintaining the safety and airworthiness of SA 330 J helicopters by preventing potential main gearbox oil cooling fan rotor failures. For operators and maintenance organizations, adhering to these requirements reduces the risk of damage to hydraulic systems and flight controls, which could compromise helicopter control. Compliance ensures continued safe operation and regulatory conformity.
What To Do
Operators must perform repetitive inspections of the MGB oil cooling fan rotor blade play every 10 flight hours for helicopters with affected bearings. Bearings showing less than 0.2 mm play must be replaced with serviceable bearings before the next flight. All affected bearings must be replaced within specified flight hour limits or within 39 months from 29 September 2022. Additionally, the improved MGB fan bearing assembly must be installed within 63 months from 29 September 2022 to terminate repetitive inspections.
