What to do
Operators must modify the affected outer wing centre spar parts according to Airbus Service Bulletin A340-57-4008 Revision 03 or earlier approved revisions. The modification must be completed within the compliance times specified: before exceeding 13,300 flight cycles or 53,200 flight hours for short-range operations, or before 10,600 flight cycles or 71,500 flight hours for long-range operations, or within 18 months after 5 February 2021, whichever is later. Previously accomplished modifications per earlier service bulletin revisions are accepted as compliance.
Summary
EASA Airworthiness Directive 2021-0032 is an airworthiness directive addressing the modification of the outer wings centre spar on Airbus A340-211, A340-212, A340-213, A340-311, A340-312, and A340-313 aeroplanes. The directive mandates reinforcement of the rear face of the centre wing spar to prevent structural cracks discovered during fatigue testing. It applies to specific manufacturer serial numbers as listed in the directive.
What changed
This directive supersedes the previous DGAC France AD F-2000-213-149R1 and introduces a reduced compliance threshold for the modification of the affected wing spar parts. It retains the original modification requirements but shortens the compliance time to ensure earlier implementation of the reinforcement. No additional work is required for aeroplanes already modified according to earlier service bulletin revisions.
Why it matters
This directive is critical for maintaining the structural integrity of the Airbus A340 wings, preventing potential safety risks from undetected cracks in the centre spar. Operators, maintenance organizations, and compliance teams must ensure timely modifications to avoid grounding or regulatory non-compliance. Early detection and correction reduce the risk of structural failure and enhance overall flight safety.
