What to do
Operators of AB412 and AB412EP helicopters must perform an inspection of the electrical power cable assembly within 25 flight hours or 3 months from 11 September 2020, whichever occurs first. If any damage or discrepancies are found, corrective actions must be completed before the next flight according to Leonardo Service Bulletin 412-160. Alternative methods of compliance may be requested and approved by EASA if substantiated.
Summary
EASA Airworthiness Directive 2020-0192 is an airworthiness directive issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency affecting Leonardo S.p.A. AB412 and AB412EP helicopters. It mandates inspection of the electrical power cable assembly to detect potential chafing caused by an improperly installed protective grommet in the emergency bus interlock compartment. The directive aims to prevent autopilot failure and loss of avionics systems due to wiring damage.
What changed
This new airworthiness directive introduces a one-time inspection requirement for the electrical power cable assembly on all serial numbers of AB412 and AB412EP helicopters. It also requires corrective actions if any discrepancies are found during the inspection, based on Leonardo Service Bulletin 412-160. No previous directives are superseded by this AD.
Why it matters
This directive is critical for aviation professionals because it addresses a safety issue that could lead to autopilot disconnection and loss of avionics, increasing pilot workload and reducing helicopter control. Operators and maintenance organizations must ensure compliance to maintain continuing airworthiness and safe operation of affected helicopters. Failure to comply could result in unsafe flight conditions and regulatory non-compliance.
