What to do

Operators must perform detailed or general visual inspections of the wing landing gear up-lock emergency up-lock actuator wiring and conduct on-ground gravity extension tests within specified compliance times and every six months thereafter. Any discrepancies found must be corrected before further flight. Additionally, the wing landing gear electrical harnesses must be modified within 42 months after 10 August 2017, with further additional work required depending on previous modification status, all in accordance with Airbus Service Bulletin A380-92-8103 Revision 03.

Summary

EASA Airworthiness Directive 2020-0157 is an airworthiness directive issued for Airbus A380-841, A380-842, and A380-861 aeroplanes, excluding those with Airbus modification 77381 embodied in production. It addresses inspection and modification requirements for the landing gear gravity extension system wiring to prevent failure of the wing landing gear emergency gravity extension. The directive mandates inspections and modifications to ensure safe landing gear operation in case of normal system failure.

What changed

EASA Airworthiness Directive 2020-0157 supersedes previous directives including AD 2019-0123R1 and introduces additional inspection and modification requirements for the wing landing gear emergency up-lock actuator wiring. It requires integrity tests and additional work on electrical harnesses per Airbus Service Bulletin A380-92-8103 Revision 03, extending and refining previous inspection and modification mandates to address wiring fatigue degradation.

Why it matters

This directive is critical for aviation professionals as it ensures the reliability of the emergency gravity extension system for the wing landing gear on Airbus A380 aircraft. Compliance prevents potential landing gear extension failures that could compromise safe landing operations. Operators, maintenance organizations, and compliance teams must adhere to these requirements to maintain aircraft airworthiness and regulatory compliance.
