EASA SIB 2008-75: CAA-NZ CAN 75-001 - Alpha Aviation R2000 Aeroplanes - Carburettor Heating Ducts

What to do

Operators of affected Alpha Aviation R2000, Robin R2000, and HR200 series aircraft should inspect the carburettor heat ducting at the next scheduled maintenance inspection if not already done. If ducting shows signs of deterioration or matches the specified part numbers, it should be replaced following Alpha Aviation Service Bulletin AA-SB-71-003. For further guidance, operators can contact the CAA or obtain the service bulletin from the Alpha Aviation website.

Summary

CAA-NZ CAN 75-001 is a Continuing Airworthiness Notice issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand concerning Alpha Aviation R2000 series aircraft carburettor heating ducts. It addresses an incident where the carburettor heat ducting collapsed, restricting airflow and causing engine power loss. The notice also applies to Robin R2000 and HR200 series aircraft fitted with similar carburettor heat ducting.

What changed

This notice introduces advisory recommendations for inspecting and replacing the carburettor heat ducting on affected Alpha Aviation R2000, Robin R2000, and HR200 series aircraft. It recommends replacing the original ducting with part number 60-71-200-520 or an alternative Aeroduct SCAT-8 ducting to prevent duct collapse and engine power loss. The document is non-mandatory and does not supersede any previous directives.

Why it matters

The notice is important for aviation professionals because collapsed carburettor heat ducting can cause engine power loss, especially during critical flight phases like missed approaches. Operators and maintenance teams need to be aware of this risk to ensure aircraft safety and continued airworthiness. Following the recommendations helps prevent potential emergency landings caused by restricted carburettor airflow.
