What to do
Operators of affected GE GEnx-1B engines must remove and replace the fuel hydraulic lines during the next engine shop visit after October 12, 2022, following the procedures in GE Service Bulletin 73-0099 R00. Maintenance teams should verify engine serial numbers for applicability and coordinate with GE for service information. Requests for alternative methods of compliance can be submitted to the FAA's ECO Branch if necessary.
Summary
The Federal Aviation Administration's Airworthiness Directive 2022-18-04 addresses certain General Electric Company GEnx-1B model turbofan engines. This directive mandates the removal and replacement of specific fuel hydraulic lines due to high cycle fatigue cracks found at braze joints on fuel manifolds, which could lead to fuel leaks. The affected engines include multiple GEnx-1B variants with serial numbers ranging from 956-102 through 958-802.
What changed
This new airworthiness directive introduces a requirement to remove and replace the fuel hydraulic lines on affected GE GEnx-1B engines. It follows a manufacturer redesign of the high-pressure turbine and low-pressure turbine fuel hose manifolds to address high cycle fatigue failures at braze joints. The directive incorporates GE GEnx-1B Service Bulletin 73-0099 R00 dated February 28, 2022, as the approved method for compliance.
Why it matters
This directive is critical for aviation professionals because it addresses an unsafe condition that could result in fuel leaks, engine fires, and potential damage to the aircraft. Operators and maintenance organizations must ensure compliance to maintain engine airworthiness and prevent operational disruptions caused by fuel leaks. The directive also impacts maintenance planning as the replacement must occur at the next engine shop visit, affecting scheduling and resource allocation.
